Tube Socks and Sports Bras: “Sorrowhead”

The not-so full seats at Arrowhead Stadium last weekend pretty much sums up the team’s season. I saw an aerial view picture of Arrowhead last weekend and in this era of football, it was the emptiest I have personally ever seen Arrowhead Stadium in quite some time. Of course, there were still a good amount of people at the game, but man there were a lot of empty red seats. But due to the team’s record of 1-10, it is not surprising.

Honestly, I have stopped watching a majority of the Chiefs games because it is so painful to watch your hometown team struggle. I have never been a die-hard Chiefs fan, but I know the Chief’s fan base is pretty emotional and outspoken.

On Nov. 18, many fans were so fed up that they even wore black in protest to show how unhappy they were with the team, coaching, and management. This protest was sparked from a Facebook group called “Save Our Chiefs.” A few weeks ago, the group had a banner fly over Arrowhead saying, “WE DESERVE BETTER! FIRE PIOLI—BENCH CASSEL.” That message seems pretty straightforward to me. Some fans could even be seen wearing the infamous brown paper sack over their head to show how embarrassed they were by the team. Some of the sacks even had the words “Sorrowhead” written for everyone to see. With many fans also not wanting to renew their season tickets for next year, the disappointment from the fans has been heard loud and clear. Fans have made it clear they want not only head coach Romeo Crennel fired, but also general manager Scott Pioli.

Earlier in the season, many people called for the “benching” of quarterback Matt Cassel. But even though Cassel has lost his starting job to Brady Quinn, the team is still unable to turn things around.

To inform you on some of the team’s struggles, the Chiefs have not scored a touchdown since the first quarter of the Pittsburgh game on Nov. 12. That totals up to 11 quarters without a touchdown. Eleven. The only player who has scored since the Pittsburgh game is the kicker, Ryan Succop. If your kicker is the player scoring most of the points for your team every week…you might have a bit of a problem. I would put a sack over my head too if I was at Arrowhead.

Out of 32 NFL teams, guess where the Chiefs rank in the standings. Going strong at number 32. The Chiefs are the worst team in the NFL. I doubt we see any playoff games for the Chiefs this season. But honestly, I don’t want to sit through any more games than necessary. Let’s just get this season over with. It think everybody has had enough.

The only upside to this season is that if the team does finish the season with the worst record, the Chiefs will get the first draft pick. Hopefully, they are smart and draft a quarterback. Who knows what will happen this off season. Next year, we could see a completely different coaching staff. With the pressure from fans, a new coaching staff seems very likely. But all I know is that something needs to change because I think I speak for all of Kansas City when I say that I cannot take another season of this embarrassment.

UPDATE: In light of recent events, my prayers go out to the Kansas City Chiefs organization and all of the families involved in the tragedy that occurred Saturday morning.
