Q & A with Campus Minister Joe LaScala about opportunities chapel brings

Campus minister Joe LaScala gives his thoughts on the Chapel of St. Joseph and how it will affect campus ministry events in the years to come.

1. Do you think it will make the school more appealing, from a religious stand-point?

‘See I really don’t know. I don’t look at that kind of stuff. I like that [the chapel] fits a lot more so we can do a lot more. We needed a renovated prayer space so we can do more. Now we have more options for retreats and different activities. We’re going to do all the normal stuff that we usually do but now since with the updated and bigger space we can do more.

2. How do you think the physical building will make the campus look?

‘I think it’s going to look really good from the pictures that I’ve seen. It will look amazing. It will be different bu unique in its own way.

3. Overall, what did you think of the ground-breaking ceremony?

‘It went pretty well. With it being a new chapel the church has different things that it has to do. And it believes that chapel in any [religious organization] is an off0shoot of the church; so that’s why Bishop Finn was here. He was kind of giving his approval and his affirmation; and saying its a good idea. His supports is a good thing. It was great that we had so many sisters here, it show there support too.’

4. Do you think the construction will be distracting to students?

‘If they let it be. If anything it will be an excuse to [the students].’

5. Do you think the school should have waited until summer to begin construction?

‘No, I don’t know the reasoning behind [the construction schedule] but I trust those who made the decision.’

7. What are the best aspects of the Chapel of St. Joseph?

‘I think it will be updated technologically so we can use different sounds and it will let us use different media. Also [the chapel] will accentuate the spirituality of the school and help the growth of that.’

8. What are the worst parts of the chapel being built?

‘Well there’s the loss of some of the quad area but I think it’s a necessary loss if we want to gain the chapel. We’re still going to have a beautiful quad. We’re still going to have beautiful grounds but I guess some people could see that as a loss. That’s stretching for me’”I don’t see that as a loss I see it as a gain.’
