Students view on education decreases learning

Students+view+on+education+decreases+learning

Think about the last time you received a test grade back. When your friend or parent approached you about your test, what did they ask?

“What did you get?”

“What was your score?”

Those two questions seem to be becoming the most frequently asked question when tests are given back to students. However, shouldn’t the real question be, “What did you learn?”

Not only has learning just become a process of memorizing facts and regurgitating it two weeks later on a test, but it has become a numbers game. In high school, suddenly everything about education changes. You become your grades. A test score, an ACT score, a grade point average. Students become their number. Unfortunately, this has had a negative impact on the learning experience.

Students have become robots. We go day by day sitting in classes learning material we may never use later in life. But, school implants the idea that it doesn’t really matter if we won’t use the material later in life, all that matters is coming out of the class with a high grade.

In today’s society, education has taken on a winning mentality, only focusing on who has the best grades. Unfortunately, grades aren’t always representative of a student’s knowledge. Therefore, several students are being overlooked simply because they can’t keep up with the competitive standards of the world of education.

As students start to reach a higher level of education, schools start to tell students that they will not be successful unless they maintain certain grades or scores. Everyday I see examples of teachers and students only caring about the scores that show up on their report cards and transcripts.

But what if I don’t want to become just another number in the grade book? What if I want to come to school to actually focus on material that will benefit me, instead of constantly having my PowerSchool tab open checking my grades.

If everyone stopped constantly worrying about grades, students would be relieved of the pressure and actually want to come to school everyday to learn the material. If education focused on learning, we would see a change in students attitudes. But until then, students are going to continue to go through the motions or cut corners simply to “make it” in the education system.
