One goal: Olympic swimmer

by Jordan Berardi

Dara Torres. Jenny Thompson. Inge De Bruijn. These three women have many things in common. They have competed in the Olympics. From those Olympic competitions, they have each earned various medals. Torres and Thompson have both been part of the American swim team while De Bruijn has been part of the Dutch swim team.

For freshman Andie Round these women are examples of what she is striving to become.

According to Andie’s mother, Terri, Andie has always loved the water which is why she started swimming at the age of three.

“First, lessons were given to her by her dad, and she always loved it,” Terri said.

She practices seven times a week, which sometimes means practicing twice a day. Her practice schedule allows little time for homework, but she sees the importance of academics before athletics.

“Swimming and school are very hard to balance,” Andie said. “I know that I try very hard to get good grades because you never know what could happen to your swimming.”

Her mother sees Andie’s schedule as an opportunity for her to learn how to manage her time.

“In a lot of ways it helps her stay more organized due to her compromised time,” Terri said. “[Her compromised time] helps her stay motivated to do well.”

Currently, Andie is a Junior National qualifier and is working toward National and Olympic trial cuts. Andie hopes to be a member for the World Team in the summer of 2014. For that, she must qualify for Nationals and at Nationals she must place in the top two to advance.

Andie’s favorite events are the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter backstroke. However, Andie also swims the 100 meter butterfly, freestyle and breaststroke.

Terri sees Andie competing at a higher level as she continues her swimming career.

“I see Andie going all the way,” Terri said. “[I see her going] to the Olympics, hopefully. And I see her swimming at a [Division 1] college.”

Andie feels she is lucky to have a strong support system within her parents.
“I am grateful for my wonderful support system, [which] includes my parents, family, friends, coach, team and God,” Andie said.
