Freshmen form Quizlet group

By Siobhan Miller

The freshman class formed a Quizlet group where students can copy and exchange study materials for upcoming tests. Quizlet is an online source for students to create and share note cards relating to a specific subject.

Freshman Gracie Fleming created the freshman class Quizlet group after being

encouraged to use the site at a STAr Seminar meeting. Fleming said that her initial intent in creating the group was for students to share study materials.

“This way, one student that had extra time could put together all the vocab or key facts from a chapter, and everyone else could study it,” Fleming said.

Fleming stated that the majority of the grade is a member of the group and finds it an effective study aid. Freshman English l teacher Mrs. Carrie Jacquin agrees with Flemings statement and continues to encourage incoming freshman to use the site.

“I’m all for the freshman using Quizlet in the way it’s intended to be used; as a vocabulary study tool,” Jacquin said.

Fleming recognizes the potential cheating threat that Quizlet offers, but stated that there is an opportunity for cheating present in every online source.

“While thinking about it, I could see how students could use [Quizlet] to cheat if a teacher asks them to look up vocab terms for a grade, and they instead just printed off the words one of their friends defined,” Fleming said. “However, Moodle and Google Docs could be used to cheat, yet we still use them, trusting that they won’t be. There is a great number of students not cheating for every student that is cheating.”

Jacquin stated that the way students use [Quizlet] will be to their benefit if used properly.

“Like any other tool, it’s disappointing and dismaying to me if a student misuses [Quizlet] to cheat or shortcut themselves out of learning; chances that will be reflected in their test and quiz grades,” Jacquin said.

Freshman Hilary Talken, a frequent “sharer” in the class Quizlet group, stated that most girls had the “dignity and sense” not to cheat. Talken adds that most girls wouldn’t even think about using [Quizlet] to cheat and faculty should continue to allow students to use the site.

“[Quizlet] is a helpful website that saves paper and allows us to use our netbooks to study,” Talken said.

Despite the potential cheating threat that Quizlet presents, faculty members continue to encourage students to use the site.
