Administration to offer summer camp to girls

by Libby Hyde

STA hopes to offer a new camp to middle school girls this summer focusing on tutoring and recreational activities. According to STA president Nan Bone at the most recent meeting with the Student Leadership Team, this will hopefully effect STA’s diversity in the future.

Six years ago, STA had 13 percent racial diversity, and it has steadily gone up every year about one half to one percent. Now, STA’s freshman class has a diversity percentage of 17 percent, and for the entire school, its at about 15 percent, according to director of admissions Rosann Hudnall.

This camp’s main purpose is to help middle school girls who would not normally have the tools necessary to get into or be successful at St. Teresa’s, according to what president Nan Bone informed senior class President Celia O’Flaherty and the rest of the Student Leadership Team during the meeting. Bone also said she hopes this camp will help students who wouldn’t be prepared for courses at St. Teresa’s.

According Hudnall, some of the things the administration reviews when deciding on accepting students include HSPT scores, grades, and teacher recommendations. Bone informed the Leadership team that this camp would help students improve their HSPT scores, so they are able to perform better on the test, and also be more equipped to handle the courses at STA.

O’Flaherty expressed her excitement about a growing diversity at STA.

“In the end, I think it will effect STA’s [diversity],” O’Flaherty said. “I like the idea that [the administration] is working towards getting girls who are more diverse by helping them learn instead of taking girls who are diverse just because they are.”

Hudnall liked the idea of STA becoming more diverse through this new opportunity.

“I love seeing the new direction the school goes every year, and I look forward to seeing where this new idea leads.” Hudnall said.

STA’s principal for academic affairs Barbara McCormick also commented on this new idea.

“I don’t see it changing STA, but it is possible that it would broaden the opportunity for some students to attend STA that otherwise would not have the resources to do so,” McCormick wrote in a statement. “I support the idea of offering summer programs to enhance student opportunities; therefore, I look forward to be involved in the planning and implementation of these programs. It truly is an example of the Sister’s mission towards serving the dear neighbor.”

Though the date of this camp and other logistics have not yet been decided, the administration plans to carry it out sometime this summer with the help of teachers and administrators.
