Jacey Korth: Middle school bringing out a different and new personality

    CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE

This audio interview is part of a series completed by STA journalism students who sat down with middle school students from around Kansas City.  We hoped to find out the realities of middle school life, from dating to cliques, from playing violin to playing volleyball.  The series was inspired by Ira Glass’s public radio show This American Life and its episode “Middle School.”  Please check back each day for the next few weeks to listen to another installment.

In this interview, 6th grader Jacey Korth of Good Shepherd school opens up about her middle school experience, and her transition from being what she considered a tom-boy in her 5th grade year, to a “girlier” 6th grader. As we discussed different aspects of her life: her family, friends, even her band mates, she gave me the opportunity to explore the differences of her middle-school self from the girl she used to be.

During our interview, Jacey really opened up about why she thinks she changed the way she dresses. “I think I just wanted to fit in more,” Jacey said. “We went to the mall one day, and [my dad and I] were in Abercrombie, and I just liked all their stuff.”
