So, I’ve made it through every grade, meeting 4 new friends along the way. It’s time for round two.
It was sophomore Erin Seller’s glasses that called out to me, “Meet me!” when I saw them that helped me choose her as date number 5. If you haven’t seen these glasses, they’re trendy and retro and something I could never pull off. Plus they talk.
Anyways, behind the glasses is very smart young lady. Obviously – she wears glasses. Her parents are both lawyers/chemical engineers and her brother went to Wash U – one of my dream schools before I stopped kidding myself. She’s doubling up on math classes just for kicks and is in accelerated world studies.
“In some ways [sophomore year] is easier than freshman year because you know what to expect, but in other ways there’s more pressure to do well,” Erin said.
Exactly. Warning: it gets worse every year.
But it was more than Erin’s brains and insight that stood out to me on our “date.”
Erin was the first one I’ve come across in my experiment to turn the tables on me. First, I asked her my routine “get-to-know-you” questions and we talked about her basics; but I guess Erin is also on a mission to get to know strangers, because she soon starting asking me similar questions. It felt good to be asked to talk about myself for once, instead of spilling my guts to fill the silence.
Erin’s ability to get me talking (more than I already do) goes right along with her future plans. She is thinking about studying psychology and maybe becoming a psychiatrist. Even though our conversation didn’t get too deep and I wasn’t laying on a couch, I can tell that Erin would be a great pair of ears to talk to if I needed to. Those things are more than just trendy glasses holders. They listen.
So, sorry I talked so much Erin. But can I say it’s your fault for being too personable?
Erin Sellers, it was nice to meet you.
